My hand was sweaty inside his, and I was desperate for the movie to be over. Josh was shorter than me, which isn’t unusual when you’re 13; he had freckles, spiky hair, and a face that resembled a mouse. He was my first boyfriend and I would daydream about him while I sat in the bathtub. Josh had previously dated another girl for 2 months and in middle school this was considered very serious; we all thought they would get married one day.

As we drove through the tunnels, I serenaded my boyfriend with one of those really sad Adele songs; he loved it, I swear. We were on our way to Geneva after having stayed the night in Mulhouse, France. Do I sound like a travel snob? I was really looking forward to going back to Switzerland, after stopping in Lucerne and Basel on our way to Tuscany last year. There’s your travel snobbery. Once we got to the other side of the mountains the sun suddenly came out from behind the clouds, and chose to bestow upon us the powers of Vitamin D (in Netherlands we don’t get a lot of this.)

An Impending European Apocalypse

My boyfriend and I spent the two weeks before our trip completely worried about the weather, and obsessively checking the forecast. We had originally planned to go back to the Harz Mountains in Germany; it was one of our favorite previous trips. But as our vacation came closer the forecast went from partly cloudy, to possible showers, and then became what some might call a sign of the impending apocalypse.

I recently celebrated my one year anniversary of living in Netherlands and I have gotten to know the country and it’s people quite well (some people very well, hint hint.) I have come to love it here, even on the rainiest days of the year! (Did the rain part sound believable?)

I even bike everywhere like a real Dutchie, although I have fortunately avoided the most common right of passage, having my bike stolen. So, what are some of the things I love most about this tulip covered, orange wearing, bike stealing, Heineken drinking nation?
